School District Unifies its Access Control and Video Surveillance Efforts

The Culver County Unified School District (CCUSD) in California encompasses five elementary schools, a middle school, a high school, a continuation school, and an adult school that contains 7,500 students. And as you can imagine with some many facilities and so many students and faculty, security quickly became an issue, especially considering the CCUSD was using an outdated analog security and surveillance system.

So when two of the district’s elementary schools were burglarized, resulting in the loss of $15,000 in iMac computers, Ted Yant, the CCUSD security supervisor, decided it was time to upgrade the district’s security system and integrate an access control solution.

Aspects of the New CCUSD Security System

  • Access Control: The Sargent Profile Series v.S1 power over Ethernet (PoE) cylindrical locks and exit devices were installed on the school’s gymnasium, which is often rented out to private groups. These devices connect to the high school’s Ethernet network and offer real-time door status monitoring and lockdown capabilities. Yant also installed HID Global’s Edge IP access control solution, which also uses a PoE connection, to keep unwanted vehicles off the high school campus.
  • Infrastructure Backbone: Carlsbad, Calif.-based Next Level Security Systems – a developer of unified, networked security solutions – installed the NLSS Gateway, integrating access control, video management, video analytics, and intrusion detection.
  • Upgraded Video Surveillance: New megapixel cameras were installed at all district locations. Sony SNC-DH160 network high definition (HD) infrared (IR) mini dome cameras were installed on the exteriors of buildings, while Sony SNC-DH110 HD mini dome cameras and Arecont Vision SurroundVideo panoramic cameras were installed in hallways, classrooms, and computer labs. There are now more than 100 megapixel and analog cameras — tied together by Axis Communications video servers — throughout the district.
