Security: A Collaborative Effort

For facility security to be as effective as possible, it must be a collaborative effort on the part of dedicated security staff and non-security staff such as employees. Security staff have a wealth of technology and resources at their disposal, but at the end of the day, it just might be a tip from a vigilant employee who spotted something out of the ordinary that prevents a security situation from occurring. While in the past employees may have been hesitant to make security threats public out of concern of damaging their company’s reputation, today it is widely recognized that employees are a resource that can and should be used for security purposes, and they are often encouraged to do so. In order to maximize the use of this large resource, dedicated security resources must devise ways to work in concert with employees using human resources and technology for a truly collaborative, double-pronged security effort.

Working Together for Better Security

The first way to integrate these two security forces is through education. Education provides a foundation that will inform employees’ future actions in the security sphere. Informational seminars on security threats to look for, and what to do in the event of a security event are good places from which to start. Education should also focus on what the security team itself does and how it reacts to security threats so that both sides have an understanding of each other. Equally important is education on security technology. No amount of technology will serve any use unless everyone is trained on how it works and how to use it.

Another way the two security elements can work together is using social media. A domain that has long been part of the corporate sphere for purposes such as marketing, social media is also an invaluable security tool. Its ease of use and huge user base means that many employees are already skilled in its application, and can easily transfer this knowledge to its usage in the security sphere. Social media such as Twitter allows everyone to communicate quickly and on a large scale, enabling fast dissemination of information and instructions regarding security threats.
