Pandemics are a crisis that could take months or years to resolve on their own. With the start of the new school year rapidly approaching, talk has turned to the idea of reopening schools at all levels for in-person instruction again. This topic was the focus of this year’s Campus Safety Online Summit. There’s no question that campus life has changed, but how can schools both K-12 and colleges and universities – how can they adapt? That question lingered over the show.
Two thousand and three hundred school protection practitioners registered for the event. These included directions/AVPs of safety and security; facilities directors; risk managers; law enforcement; student affairs; operations; emergency managers; IT/technology directors’ principals; faculty and teachers; and finally, security officers.
Many presentations were held at the show that related to the pandemic. These topics included mental health, risk management, how to encourage and enforce mask-wearing and social distancing, identifying possible cases of infection in students or educators, plans for emergency operations, agreements for mutual aid, and Clery compliance. Other topics had to do with contact tracing, safety on social media, and what educational institutions would look like during and after the Coronavirus pandemic ends. Then there were even more topics presented at the summit, such as:
- Vaping/bullying detection
- Free speech/campus unrest
- Verbal de-escalation
- Bystander intervention
