Evaluating Your Access Control Systems in Times of Crisis

Evaluating Your Access Control Systems in Times of Crisis
This is also the right time to upgrade your access control systems, as you don’t want anyone you don’t recognize or who doesn’t have legitimate business with you to enter your premises.

With the current pandemic situation surrounding Covid-19, or the Coronavirus, it is more important than ever to allow your employees to work from home or work remotely. This is also the right time to upgrade your access control systems, as you don’t want anyone you don’t recognize or who doesn’t have legitimate business with you to enter your premises. So what can you do to improve your security system? Let’s find out.

Assess Your Current Environment

The first step in this process is to assess your current environment. What are your doors made of? That is one way to determine the types of locks you can install, especially if you are replacing traditional lock-and-key mechanisms. How many doors need to have the access control system associated with them? Connecting all of the doors to one IT closet is the best idea for security’s sake, along with having a backup as a failsafe. If your office is spread out across multiple floors of a single building or occupies multiple buildings on a single campus, then this can make matters more complicated

Redefine Access Policies

Your current access policies might also need to be redefined. Leaving the door unlocked during business hours may seem like a good idea, but it could be inadvisable and put your employees and assets at risk. How many employees and adjuncts need to be able to access your space? This is important for both businesses and educational institutions to consider. What about access roles? How much access do different levels of employees receive? How do you differentiate between fulltime employees and part-time ones? These questions are all essential and need to be answered before you can move on.

Do You Need to Overhaul the System?

Another question to answer has to do with transforming the system and upgrading it if need be.  Take the time to set aside resources in your budget and draw up a timeline for how long you think the project will take. How much money do you want to spend, and is there an upper limit or lower limit you have in mind? There’s an old saying that you get what you pay for, so work with the experts at ARK Systems to get the best value for your money!
